We service a lot of McIntosh gear and quite often see the late 1960s receivers with the problem glass. The lettering on the original are water soluble and if the unit saw moisture during it's life, the dial markings peel off the glass. Especially if the tuning pointer comes in contact with it at any point during its travel.
For a reasonable price, replacing the glass is a no-brainer for most customers. And it's a great way to restore that 'new' look to an older McIntosh 1700.
